Discouragement In The Christian Life-Finding Strength From God’s Promises

Discouragement In The Christian Life

Every human experiences Discouragement in the Christian Life at some point, and yes, that means Christians. The good part of this is finding strength from God’s promises.

There are seasons when our prayers seem unanswered, our burdens feel too heavy, and our strength begins to fade. We may question whether God hears us, wonder why life has become so difficult, or feel exhausted from carrying the weight of daily struggles.

The good news is that God understands our weakness. He never promised that the Christian life would be free from trials, but He did promise that we would never face them alone.

One of the most comforting passages in all of Scripture is found in Isaiah 40:28–31. These verses remind us that while our strength is limited, God’s strength is endless.

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

— Isaiah 40:28–31 (KJV)

Discouragement in the Christian Life Does Not Mean God Has Left You

Even faithful believers become discouraged:

Moses became overwhelmed by the burden of leading Israel:

When Moses reached his breaking point under the immense weight of arbitrating disputes and constant complaints from over a million people in the wilderness, he openly despaired and asked God to take his life.

God resolved this crisis by implementing shared leadership and empowering his servant:

  • Delegation through Jethro’s Counsel: Earlier in Exodus 18, his father-in-law Jethro advised him to stop judging minor cases all day and appoint capable, trustworthy leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
  • The Seventy Elders: In Numbers 11, God directed Moses to gather 70 respected elders of Israel so He could pour the same Spirit upon them to bear the burden alongside him.

David often cried out to God during seasons of fear and despair:

King David’s raw, honest prayers during times of extreme distress are recorded throughout the biblical Book of Psalms. Instead of hiding his fear, he routinely brought his suffering directly to God.

 Key Psalms of Lament

  • Psalm 13: A desperate cry where David asks “How long?” four times, feeling abandoned but ultimately choosing to rejoice in God’s unfailing love.
  • Psalm 34: Written while fleeing for his life, recounting how this “poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him”.
  • Psalm 40 describes being pulled from a literal “pit of despair” and having his feet set upon a rock.
  • Psalm 142: A prayer from the darkness of a cave, where David poured out his complaint because he was brought very low.

The Pattern of His Laments

David’s prayers typically follow a distinct emotional progression:

  1. Honest Bleeding: He fully expresses his deep sorrow, fear, and feeling of abandonment without putting on a brave face.
  2. Bold Petitioning: He specifically asks God to listen, save him, and intervene in his circumstances.
  3. Intentional Remembering: He shifts his focus from his overwhelming enemies to God’s past faithfulness and character.
  4. Returning to Praise: He anchors his heart back to trust and thankfulness, even before his situation physically changes.

Elijah, after witnessing God’s mighty power on Mount Carmel, became so discouraged that he asked God to take his life:

This account, found in 1 Kings 19, illustrates how intense emotional and physical exhaustion can follow great spiritual victories. Threatened by Queen Jezebel, Elijah fled in fear, felt utterly isolated, and begged God to end his life. God responded not with rebuke, but with profound care, restoration, and a gentle whisper.

The Apostle Paul endured persecution, imprisonment, hardship, and suffering, yet he continued to trust God’s faithfulness:

The Apostle Paul’s life demonstrates that immense suffering and persecution do not diminish God’s faithfulness. Despite chains, shipwrecks, and imprisonment, he viewed trials as opportunities to advance the gospel, knowing that Christ’s sustaining grace and eternal promises are completely reliable

Discouragement is not evidence that your faith has failed. It is often the place where God reminds us that our strength is never enough, but His always is.

Waiting on the Lord -when you have discouragement in the Christian life

The scripture in Isaiah does not promise that believers will never grow weary.  Instead, God promises that those who wait upon the Lord will find renewed strength.

Waiting on God is not passive resignation. It is confident trust. It is choosing to believe God’s promises even when we cannot yet see His purposes.

Sometimes God changes our circumstances, then He changes us while we are walking through them. In either case, He remains faithful.

God Gives Strength for Today

Notice that the scriptures in Isaiah do not say God gives strength only to the strong. He gives power to the faint. He increases the strength of those who have no might.

That means God’s strength is available to those who admit they need Him, and it is often when we reach the end of our own ability that we discover the beginning of God’s sufficiency.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

Perhaps today you are carrying a burden that no one else can see. You may be weary from grief, illness, financial struggles, family problems, disappointment, or simply the pressures of everyday life.

Take heart, be encouraged, and remember the same God who created the heavens and the earth has not forgotten you.

He knows your name, He sees your tears, He understands your struggles, and He promises to strengthen those who place their hope in Him.

Final Thoughts

Discouragement may visit every believer, but it does not have to define us. Our hope is not found in our own strength, our circumstances, or our ability to endure.

Our hope is found in the everlasting God who never grows weary, never loses control, and never abandons His children. When your strength is gone, remember God’s promise:

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength…” verse 18 – Isaiah 30

No matter how difficult today may seem, God can carry you through it, and in His perfect time, He will lift you once again.

A Prayer for the Discouraged

Heavenly Father, there are times when my heart grows weary and my strength seems to disappear. Thank You for reminding me that You never grow tired and that Your power never fails.Help me to trust You when I cannot see the path ahead. Renew my strength, give me peace in the waiting, and remind me that You are always with me. Teach me to rely on Your promises instead of my own understanding. Thank You for loving me, sustaining me, and giving me hope through Jesus Christ. In His precious name, I pray.

Amen.

God says, “Wait upon the Lord.”
