What Does It Mean To Seek God- and why do we seek God? post updated 06-24-24

What does it mean to seek God? I am sure this question is most important for those who have never understood the total concept of God and His divine nature.

Seeking God has quite a few descriptions and it can mean exploring who He is, what He does, how to believe in Him, and why to believe in Him. Seeking God is about soul searching-cleansing and believing He is real, He is and forever will be omnipotent. It is the beginning of unrealized FAITH.

Just so you know…He is waiting with an outstretched hand…He loves you.

Seeking God

When an individual decides it is time to seek God; it usually means they have a need and have made a choice to have a relationship with Him. It reflects they see the need to live and be more conscious of their life of prayer, studying His word, and a deeper understanding of God.

However, it also means the following:  The Lord has to draw a person to Him. *scripture below John 6:44

To understand this better if you have never believed in God, and your heart has believed in the past that God wasn’t real…why did that change? God is merciful and does not want a soul to perish without knowing Him and His greatness.

What Are Your Desires or Needs?

Why are you reading this?

  • Is there something missing in your life?
  • Do you want to feel peaceful, less worried, less stressed, and more in touch with yourself?
  • Have you suddenly realized that you have a soul that is craving something more?
  • Are you facing a distraught period within your life and you are suffering and do not know how to confront it?

When Do People Begin To Seek God?

When Do People Seek God - a woman with long hair hiding behind a wood panel

As we have acknowledged above; it is often when a person realizes they want to have a more peaceful, fulfilled existence in life. They realize the need to have more knowledge of the God who made the universe.  And they want to know more about His omnipotence and power.

As you will see below; it is also when God has made His move on the individual that he needs more than he has in life that only He can give them. Peaceful living, contentment, happiness, safety, and security.

Some people seek God only when they become stressed, worn, torn, and facing something they cannot master themselves. Why?  It seems they have been too busy, trying to figure things out themselves. Then all of a sudden, they are desperate for His mercy, they are hurting, sad, and need peace. Sometimes because they do not have any other choice.

“When we seek God all of sudden and expect His instant mercy- He desires a commitment from us.”

“And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.” John 6: 65

When we seek God, we may have to wait, just like He has waited for us to seek Him. This is not because He is merciless but because we may need to ask for forgiveness. Yes, He should be the first choice when we feel the pain of agony in any life situation. However, with an ongoing commitment to prayer, we might have eliminated the stressful situation to some degree.

God’s Promises Are True

I will be with you“But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. 30When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; 31(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.  Deuteronomy 4:29-31 KJV

“And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.” Jerimiah 24:7 KJV

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV

What To Remember When Seeking God

Is this your first desire to seek God? We know that humans are carnal and everyone needs repentance. Repentance comes first. Then this scripture applies to everyone.

The Holy Scriptures tell us the following:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 KJV

It would be necessary to think about the scripture above and why we are seeking God. Are troubles mounting, heartaches, pain, and bewilderment…or even if it is just the fact you feel you are missing something in your life?

Ask yourself the question is God trying to show me or tell me something important? He probably is. He is seeking for you to trust and believe in Him for all of life’s occurrences. The answer is definitely yes as we must be drawn to Him. Again the scripture for the evidence:
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6: 44 KJV

When Christians Seek God And His Righteousness

How do Christians seek God and His Righteousness? The answer is fairly simple. When an individual accepts that God is real, and becomes saved by His Grace, it is then they should seek God’s righteousness.

“The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.” Proverbs 15:9 (KJV)

A Life of Prayer

If we profess to be saved from our sins and live a Godly life, we must learn to keep in touch with our Lord, and Savior regularly, and prayer is what keeps us in contact with Him. It is important to make time to “seek Him,” before we get into a crisis state of mind.

Prayer is not for just when we need something. Prayer is to keep us walking in the light of salvation and knowing His will for our life.”

“The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.” Psalms 34:17 KJV

Where and How Do We Seek God

PrayingTo begin if you have never known what it is to seek God; it is probably best to find a quiet place, anywhere that gives you a calm feeling. Just you and Him…He is there and He knows all about you…believe it!

Relax, and express your feelings and heart to Him…He knows your sincerity, your desires, your fears, and your problems. He already knows and wants to supply your needs.

The first step toward receiving the Spirit of God within is: You must first confess your sins and ask for forgiveness. This is done by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God. This is the beginning of faith as we have stated.

“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” Act: 16:31 KJV. We must have faith and know that The Words of God – written by the Holy Men of God-The Bible are true.

“And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3 KJV
