Why Is Change Hard
Why Is Change Hard For Most Humans? – This Post Updated 11-17-24
Some adults will tell you anything to make you believe they do not need to change anything about themselves for the better…however, most of us need to change something at some point in our lives.
It seems that as we start to get into adulthood, it is harder to deal with life changes and the need to change some things within. Most people, certainly myself, have something that probably needs to be adjusted to make us better humans. However, some individuals do not see the need for change and do not understand that life has cycles and they each make it necessary for change.
Why Is Change Hard And Why Is It Necessary?
We must change or we become motionless in a world that is constantly changing. To me, it is simple in the aspect that we often change without realizing it.
Some individuals think that the world around them needs to change. So…they never try to change what or even seek or admit something is incomplete within their life. It is all about how the other individual needs to change. Then one day out of the blue something hits them square in the face that gives them a wake-up call. They either ignore it, or they seek to see where they need to change and how to do it.
Lasting Changes Come From Within – this is an example of waiting until you are about to lose it all and realize it is time for a change.
We Often Forget To Look Within
It is often that we forget that it is possible that what might be hidden from our sight may be all too evident to others. We often do not analyze and ignore our emotions, our actions, or what we could be lacking. It is easier to sit back, and neglect becoming aware of our own emotional needs.
We fail to look at what we may be missing; a better happier life, better relationships, a better family and it is easier to find fault or blame someone else. It also seems evident that maybe what we see in others that we consider needs changing could be what we need to change in ourselves.
Hey, it is okay not to be perfect. No one is or ever will be. The idea is to strive to become a better human with each passing moment.
What I See Within My Life
When I go to bed at night, the first words of my prayers are something similar to:
“Lord, forgive me for my mistakes today. Help me to be a better human. Heal my thoughts, my memory, my body, my mind, and my soul. Anything in me that you see needs healing or that would separate me from you, heal me.”
I must share what my mom often prayed:
“Lord, give me clean hands, a pure heart, and a sound mind.”
Does that make me perfect, if so I would not need to pray that prayer or one similar every day. There are still things within my life that I need to work on more than I do. When we know this, we should act upon it, and try to tame those things that often get our minds, and sometimes actions into trouble.
Often I let my mind influence my soul. I think too much sometimes, and try to figure things out when there is no way I can. I allow myself to try to understand other people’s actions too much when I cannot see their hearts. Only Jesus sees the heart and soul of all humans.
We All Have Human Basic Needs
Humans have basic needs and we all want to be understood, feel important, need recognition, and respect, and feel adequate. When these emotional needs are not met it is then that behaviors can change and become defiant, obstructive, and turbulent.
That is where one must review themselves to see if they are experiencing their human basic needs.
Emotions can get us into trouble, they can take a toll on relationships at home, at work, or play. It is known that emotional needs only take place in a life filled with love, acceptance, and exchange.
Every human must feel that he or she has acquired at least some of the qualities that society regards as valuable to measure up to those around them. When this is not present in life, they may experience feelings of worthlessness, shame, or guilt.
With that given example can then come a person’s criticism of others in an attempt to elevate their standing. Defeat can then set in, discouragement, with an attitude of indifference. When this person does not feel self-respect, this will show their lack of respect for others. Re: Basic Psychiatric Nursing *Third Edition
You Cannot Change Another Human – Only Yourself…And It Must Come From Within
You cannot live your life worrying about who likes you or what can do to be liked. You have to change your mindset and make sure your actions are not contrary to being a good human. You must work to become the best person you can be and then leave it to God.
Are we judged by others and do we judge? Yes, to be honest, we all do. We all judge other people’s actions, statements, and their life. ( If only in the mind, we think, why did or do they- do that)? If they do something we disagree with, we judge (usually, even us Christians) even though we do not see the heart like Jesus. However, that is totally out of concept with The Word of God.
I know this seems impossible to tame, however, the closer we try to live with qualities of greatness, the easier it will get.
This is why it is proper to put this concept into your prayer life. “Lord, help me to see myself, change myself where needed, and live a life of sincerity.”
The fact is that very few people know us as we are. Maybe our closest friends, our family, and God are the only people who see the “real” person inside.
What Does Human Nature Have to Do With Our Basic Needs and does it have anything to do with Why is Change Hard?
Human nature (traditional stance) is a bundle of characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, which humans are said to have naturally. The term is often regarded as capturing what it is to be human or the essence of humanity. The term is controversial because it is disputed whether or not such an essence exists.
Arguments about human nature have been a mainstay of philosophy for centuries and the concept continues to provoke lively philosophical debate. The concept also continues to play a role in science, with neuroscientists, psychologists, and social scientists sometimes claiming that their results have yielded insight into human nature.
Human nature is traditionally contrasted with characteristics that vary among humans, such as characteristics associated with specific cultures. Debates about human nature are related to, although not the same as, debates about the comparative importance of genes and environment in development (“nature versus nurture“).
Christian Theology Of Human Nature
In Christian theology, there are two ways of “conceiving human nature”. The first is “spiritual, Biblical, and theistic”, whereas the second is “natural, cosmical, and anti-theistic”. The focus of this section is on the former. As William James put it in his study of human nature from a religious perspective, “religion” has a “department of human nature”.
Various views of human nature have been held by theologians. However, there are some “basic assertions” in all “biblical anthropology”.
- “Humankind has its origin in God, its creator.”
- “Humans bear the ‘image of God.”
- “Humans are to rule the rest of creation”.
The Bible contains no single “doctrine of human nature”. Rather, it provides material for more philosophical descriptions of human nature. For example, Creation as found in the Book of Genesis provides a theory on human nature.
Ending Thoughts
So how does life change, the inability to see that we need to change, basic human needs, and human nature all add up?
“Life is about change. Change happens every day, and every minute in someone’s life. Something and someone is going to change today.”
What is hard about personal change is that it is hard to see the need within ourselves, and easy to see the need in others. We have a human basic need to feel good about ourselves and believe we are doing it all right.
When we are forced to change, sometimes we want to blame it on the rest of the world and say that people are basically self-promoting, self-serving, and selfishly unaware that we exist.
That is not primarily true. Many individuals are compassionate, giving, genuine, sincere, and want to make the world a better place. We all have priorities that include family and work and usually, those come first.
When we experience unhappiness, no peace of mind, or comfort in living, it is then that we must look within. We must reach into our soul to see what we “may” be doing or not doing that is hindering our ability to see the need to change something within us.
Quick question: When was the last time you shared your happiness, promoted some stranger, not just your friends, or made someone’s day with a simple smile or pat on the back? Just asking!!!

Thank you so much for your contribution to our site. Change is difficult and some of us look at others more than we look within. I have some things that I try to work on. lol, I am working on me.
